Characterization and Mechanical Properties of Sintered Clay Minerals
Sara Tominc, Vilma Ducman, Jakob Koenig, Srečo D. Škapin, Matjaž Spreitzer, 2024, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: The need to reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprint generated by firing ceramics has stimulated research to develop sintering processes carried out at lower temperatures(ideally not above 300 °C) and high pressures (up to 600 MPa), the so-called cold sintering process (CSP) (Grasso et al., 2020, Maria et al., 2017). To evaluate the applicability of CSP to clays, we focused on two representative clay minerals, kaolinite and illite, and on the natural clay material obtained from a Slovenian brick manufacturer. The selected clay materials were characterized on the basis of mineralogical-chemical composition (XRD, XRF) and particle size distribution (SEM analysis, PSD, BET). The powders of clay minerals and natural clay material were first sintered in a heating microscope to determine the sintering conditions and then in a laboratory furnace at 1100 °C for 2 hours and additionally at 1300 °C for kaolinites. The effect of compression of the initial powders on their final properties was also investigated.

Katja Traven, Mark Češnovar, Srečo D. Škapin, Vilma Ducman, 2020, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: Alkali activated materials (AAM) are, in their broadest classification, any binder systems derived by the reaction of an alkali metal source (silicates, alkali hydroxides, carbonates , sulphates) with a solid, amorphous alumosilicate powder (found in precursors such as slag, fly ash and bottom ash). A wide variety of products can be obtained by the alkali activation process and could replace traditional construction products. Among the se, alkali activated foams (AAF) represent one of the most promising materials, owing to their economically accessible alumosilicate rich source materials, including industrial waste materials, clean processing, higher added value and most importantly, pro ducts with competitive properties. In the present study, the properties of alkali activated fly ash - based foam materials were studied at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures (up to 1200 °C ) in order to develop a durable material in terms o f mechanical properties and suitability for high temperature applications.

Odpornost lesa izbranih lesnih vrst na prostem
Miha Humar, Boštjan Lesar, Davor Kržišnik, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Velika večina drevesnih vrst iz slovenskih gozdov nima odpornega lesa, zato na prostem (pre)hitro propade. Kadar les uporabljamo v gospodarske namene, želimo te procese čim bolj upočasniti. V okviru raziskave smo v ta namen les izbranih domačih drevesnih vrst (navadne smreke (Picea abies), les smrekovih lubadark, bele jelke (Abies alba), beljave in jedrovine rdečega bora (Pinus sylvestris), jedrovine evropskega macesna (Larix decidua), navadne bukve (Fagus sylvatica), belega gabra (Carpinus betulus) in jedrovine robinije (Robinia pseudoaccacia)) impregnirali z baker-etanolaminskim biocidnim proizvodom oziroma jih termično modificirali. Vzorce smo leta 2007 izpostavili na terensko polje Oddelka za lesarstvo v Ljubljani, kjer smo vsako leto ocenjevali razkrojenost. Najhitreje so propadli vzorci gabra in bukve. Prvi razkroj na smrekovini se je pojavil po dveh letih. Les lubadark je začel trohneti leto pred referenčno smrekovino, macesnovina in jedrovina bora pa leto kasneje. Najbolje se je izkazal les robinije. Z impregnacijo smo uspešno zaščitili les iglavcev, pri bukovini in gabrovini smo bili manj uspešni. Termična modifikacija se je izkazala za uspešen postopek zaščite za vse preizkušane lesne vrste.

The role of relative humidity on crystallization of calcium carbonate from calcium acetoacetate precursor
Andreja Pondelak, Francesca Rosi, Celeste Maurich, Costanza Miliani, Srečo D. Škapin, Andrijana Sever Škapin, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Calcium acetoacetate, Ca(OAcAc)2, was exposed 7, 30 and 365 days to different values of relative humidity (33%, 48%, 75% and 96%) at 40 °C in order to study its transformation to CaCO3. The resulting Ca(OAcAc)2 decomposition and the time dependence of the phase transformations were monitored and critically evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The impact of relative humidity on CaCO3 polymorph formation was thoroughly assessed. In all of the conditions used and for all ageing periods, the formed crystal structure is found to be vaterite. At the lowest relative humidity (33%), the amorphous CaCO3 remains more or less almost untransformed even after one year of exposure. It is proposed that the reason for the stability of amorphous CaCO3 is due to the limited amount of physisorbed water on the surfaces of the particles, which is considered the driving force for its transformation. However, the carbonation process is faster in the case of the highest humidity (96%). The findings are not only important for better solutions in the field of cultural heritage, but also shed new light on the fundamental mechanism of CaCO3 crystallization.

Miha Humar, Rožle Repič, Davor Kržišnik, Boštjan Lesar, Romana Cerc Korošec, Christian Brischke, Lukas Emmerich, Gregor Rep, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The importance of thermal modification is increasing worldwide. Increased use of thermally modified timber (TMT) has resulted in a need for reliable quality control, comprising control of variation of the production within defined limits, allowing third-party control in the case of certification and the regulation of customer complaints and claims. Techniques are thus needed to characterise the modification of quality in terms of improved target properties of TMT during industrial production, and of TMT products that have been in service for an arbitrary time. In this study, we aimed to utilise dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) for this purpose. Norway spruce (Picea abies) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) samples were thermally modified at different temperatures according to different heat treatment techniques: (1) the Silvapro process based on an initial vacuum; (2) an air heat treatment, whereby samples were wrapped in aluminium foil; (3) thermal modification of wood samples in the ambient atmosphere in a laboratory oven. Wood samples from closed processes were analysed for validation. TMT was characterised with respect to mass loss, colour and density. Mass loss of wood due to modification (MLTM) was correlated with factors derived from DVS analysis. The present DVS measurements suggest that the equilibrium wood moisture content (EMC95% RH), the time to reach 10% wood moisture content (t10% MC), and the elongation factor, c, derived from a logarithmic function, can serve as alternative parameters to characterise the quality of several thermal modification processes. Further studies are recommended using other wood species, different modification processes and further parameters gained from DVS measurements to understand the robustness and the predictive power of the applied technique

Life cycle assessment of prefabricated geopolymeric façade cladding panels made from large fractions of recycled construction and demolition waste
Davor Kvočka, Anja Lešek, Friderik Knez, Vilma Ducman, Matteo Panizza, Constantinos Tsoutis, Adriana Bernardi, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The construction and demolition sector is one of the biggest consumers of natural resources in the world and consequently, one of the biggest waste producers worldwide. The proper management of construction and demolition waste (CDW) can provide major benefits for the construction and recycling industry. However, the recycling rate of CDW is relatively low, as there is still a lack of confidence in the quality of recycled CDW materials. Therefore, new research projects are looking for innovative solutions within recycling of CDW in order to overcome uncertainties currently associated with the use of construction products made from recycled or re-used CDW. In this paper, a “cradle-to-cradle” life cycle assessment (LCA) study has been conducted to investigate the environmental performance of the prefabricated geopolymeric façade cladding panels made from large fractions of CDW. The LCA results indicate that the majority of the environmental burden arises within the manufacturing stage; however, the environmental burden can be reduced with simple optimisation of the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the environmental impact of the prefabricated geopolymeric façade cladding panels is generally lower than the environmental burden associated with the façade cladding panels made from virgin materials.

High temperature resistant fly-ash and metakaolin-based alkali-activated foams
Katja Traven, Mark Češnovar, Srečo D. Škapin, Vilma Ducman, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Alkali-activated foams (AAFs) present one of the most promising materials for use in the construction sector. Their main advantages lie in their utilization of waste material and their ability to form at temperatures well below 100 °C, while still competing in performance with foamed glass or ceramics. The present body of research has focused on improving the thermal stability of fly-ash foams by i) adding metakaolin, and ii) changing the activator from sodium-based to potassium-based components. It has been confirmed that a certain increase in thermal resistance is achieved through the addition of metakaolin while changing activators played a crucial role. While sodium-based AAFs without metakaolin start to shrink at approximately 600 °C, samples that have had metakaolin added start to shrink at approximately 700 °C. Samples without metakaolin that have used a potassium activator start to shrink at approximately 800 °C, whereas potassium-based samples with the addition of metakaolin start to shrink at approximately 900 °C.

Environmentally friendly protection of European beech against fire and fungal decay using a combination of thermal modification and mineralisation
Rožle Repič, Andreja Pondelak, Davor Kržišnik, Miha Humar, Nataša Knez, Friderik Knez, Andrijana Sever Škapin, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The demand for construction timber is continuously increasing, due to its favourable characteristics. However, the adequate protection of wood is key to its successful use, as it is flammable and susceptible to biodegradation. Given that thermal modification enhances the durability of wood, and mineralisation with CaCO3 considerably improves its fire properties, it is worth considering the combined effects of the two methods. European beech (Fagus sylvatica) was selected to determine the effects of a) thermal modification, b) mineralisation through the in-situ formation of CaCO3, and c) a combination of the two procedures, on resistance to decay fungi, reaction to fire and the mechanical properties of the wood. Microscopic analysis and comparisons of the samples before and after exposure to fungi were also conducted. Mineralised wood generally had a slightly alkaline pH value and higher equilibrium moisture content, while thermal modification lowered the equilibrium moisture content. The present study demonstrated the combined effect of thermal modification and mineralisation: the best response to fire as well as resistance to fungi was achieved when the two treatments were combined. Results from the Brinell hardness and three-point bending tests indicate that both modification procedures can slightly impair the mechanical properties of the wood.

Combining mineralisation and thermal modification to improve the fungal durability of selected wood species
Rožle Repič, Andreja Pondelak, Davor Kržišnik, Miha Humar, Andrijana Sever Škapin, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The development of non-biocidal and environmentally friendly systems to protect wood against biological decay has become a high priority in recent years. In the present study the impact of an innovative modification procedure, combining two environmentally friendly modification methods: thermal modification and mineralisation, using an aqueous solution of calcium acetoacetate as a precursor, on the fungal durability of wood was evaluated. European beechwood (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway sprucewood (Picea abies) were selected as model wood species. Wood samples were treated using either a single or combination of both methods and exposed to four different fungi: Gloeophyllum trabeum, Rhodonia placenta, Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus. The effect of the different modifications on moisture content, dynamic vapour sorption, contact angle and pH value was also evaluated. Overall, the highest durability against Rhodonia placenta, Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus was achieved through thermal modification in both wood species, while the combination of mineralisation and thermal modification has a synergistic effect against degradation by Gloeophyllum trabeum. In the case of beechwood the mass loss decreased from 41% for native to 6% for combined modified samples. We proved that the effectiveness of different treatment against fungal decay of wood were in strong dependence of their moisture content, dynamic vapour sorption, contact angle and pH values. The role of fungi on the morphology of the wood and on crystal structure of formed carbonate was investigated using SEM-EDS analysis.

Mass concrete with EAF steel slag aggregate : workability, strength, temperature rise, and environmental performance
Davor Kvočka, Jakob Šušteršič, Alenka Mauko Pranjić, Ana Mladenovič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Temperature control is the primary concern during the design and construction process of mass concrete structures. As the concrete production has an enormous negative environmental impact, the development of green mass concretes will eventually become as important as the thermal characteristics. Therefore, this paper investigates the use of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel slag aggregate for the partial replacement of the natural aggregate in the production of mass concrete. The impact of EAF steel aggregate on mass concrete workability, strength, and thermal behaviour was analysed. In addition, a cradle-to-gate LCA study was conducted to evaluate the environmental footprint and sustainability potential of the tested mass concrete mixtures. The study results suggest that the use of EAF steel slag aggregate in combination with a low-heat cement with a high content of blast furnace slag can significantly lower the temperature, reduce the environmental impact, and increase the sustainability potential of mass concrete, while at the same time providing sufficient workability and compressive strength. The study results indicate that EAF steel slag can be upcycled into an aggregate for the production of green mass concrete mixtures.
