Predicting phenology of European beech in forest habitats

Povzetek: Reliable phenological observations are important for studying the response of trees to climate and climate change. National phenological networks were not specifically established to monitor tree phenology within forests, yet they are often used to generalise tree phenological phases at national or regional scales. Our objective was to investigate whether a phenological monitoring network using trees in open areas can accurately predict phenology of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) located within forests by using two models: one with correlates of environmental variables and one with interpolated monthly air temperature and sun hours. The first leaf unfolding, general leaf colouring and leaf fall dates from 2004 through 2010 were modelled using data from 47 Slovene National Phenology Network (NPN) stations in open areas and tested on phenological observations within forests using data from the UNECE CRLTAP ICP Forests network. Good agreement was found between predicted and observed first leaf unfolding in the forest, while slightly lower agreement was detected for general leaf colouring and leaf fall. Suggestions for the improvement of national phenological network are discussed in order to better predict beech phenology in forest habitats.

Growth response of different tree species (oaks, beech and pine) from SE Europe to precipitation over time

Povzetek: Changing climatic conditions can have various consequences for forest ecosystems, from increasing frequencies of forest fires, ice and windstorm events to pathogen outbreaks and mass mortalities. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was chosen for the evaluation of drought impact on the radial growth of trees after extensive preliminary testing of various calculated monthly climate parameters from the CARPATCLIM database. SPI was calculated for periods between 3 and 36 months for different sites (lowland and mountainous parts of Serbia, Southeast Europe), from which Quercus robur, Q. cerris, Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris samples were acquired. Bootstrapped Pearson%s correlations between SPI monthly indices and radial growth of tree species were calculated. We found that 12-month SPI for summer months may be a good predictor of positive and negative growth of different species at different sites. The strongest positive correlations for five of six tree-ring width chronologies were between 12-month June and 14-month September SPI, which implies that high growth rates can be expected when the autumn of the previous year, and winter, spring and summer of the current year, are well supplied with precipitation, and vice versa (low precipitation in given period/low growth rates).

Poškodbe drevja zaradi abiotskih naravnih motenj na bukovih rastiščih v Sloveniji s poudarkom na snegolomih

Povzetek: Raziskovali smo poškodovanost drevja zaradi snega v pretežno mešanih gozdnih sestojih na bukovih rastiščih v Sloveniji. V analizo smo vključili 22.609 oddelkov s prevladujočimi bukovimi rastišči, v katerih je bil delež bukve vsaj 10 % lesne zaloge sestojev. Delež iglavcev v sanitarnem poseku je bil večji pri snegolomih in vetrolomih, pri žledolomih sta bila deleža listavcev in iglavcev skoraj enaka. V bukovih gozdovih je zaradi snega najbolj poškodovano drevje v mlajših in srednjedobnih razvojnih fazah debelin 20%40 cm. Na podvzorcu 363 oddelkov, za katere smo pridobili podatke o lastnostih snežne odeje, smo z binarno logistično regresijo izdelali model verjetnosti pojava snegoloma. V model smo vključili spremenljivke količine snega v spomladanskih mesecih, fitoregijo, skalnatost, naklon terena in matično podlago. Najpomembnejša spremenljivka je bila količina snega v spomladanskih mesecih. Razlog za relativno visok sanitarni posek v bukovih gozdovih je povečan delež smreke v gozdnih sestojih, bukev je veliko manj dovzetna za poškodbe zaradi snega kot smreka. Za povečanje odpornosti sestojev predlagamo pogostejša klasična redčenja nižjih jakosti ali uvedbo situacijskih redčenj v sestojih mlajših in srednjedobnih sestojih.
